Saigon – Cu Chi – Mekong Delta – Mui Ne – Vung Tau – Can Tho
Ten days worked outward from one Saigon hotel, with only a single night away. You start with the war museums, the Reunification Palace and the Cu Chi tunnels, then take the boats at My Tho, cruise the Saigon River after dark and drive out to the Mui Ne dunes and to Vung Tau. A Jeep evening covers the colonial centre with the lights on, and the last two days go further into the delta, to Can Tho and the Cai Rang floating market.
Day 1
A private car meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. Nothing else is scheduled: the evening is free to walk District 1 or to rest after the flight.

Day 2
Out between 08h00 and 08h30 for four places in the centre: the War Remnants Museum, holding material from the First Indochina War and the war that followed; the Reunification Palace, where the country was reunified on 30 April 1975; Notre-Dame Cathedral, built by French colonists between 1863 and 1880; and the Central Post Office next to it, from the same late nineteenth century. Lunch is at a local restaurant, with time to rest afterwards. At 13h00 you drive out to Cu Chi for a short wartime documentary, then the tunnel network itself, tapioca and pandan leaf tea. Rifle shooting is available at extra cost.

Day 3
07h30 departure for My Tho wharf, where a motorboat takes you onto the Tien River past floating fish farms, under the Rach Mieu cable-stayed bridge linking Tien Giang to Ben Tre, and around the four islands, Long, Lan, Qui and Phung. You stop on Unicorn Island for a bee farm and honey tea, ride an electric cart to a fruit garden for seasonal fruit and southern folk music, then take a rowing boat into a narrow canal lined with water coconut. Back on the big boat you cross to Ben Tre for a coconut candy workshop, and at 12h00 sit down to delta cooking. At 14h00 you turn back, stopping at Vinh Trang Pagoda, the largest in Tien Giang, and reach Saigon around 18h00.

Day 4
The day is free until the evening. The boat comes alongside at 18h00, and boarding is followed by live music and dancing, the programme changing with the night. At 20h00 the cruise casts off along the Saigon River, past Nha Rong Wharf, where Ho Chi Minh left the country to look for a way to free it, then Bach Dang Wharf and Khanh Hoi Port, and turns at the Phu My Bridge. You watch the city and the riverbank life go by, and dinner is served on board. Back alongside at Saigon Port at 21h15.

Day 5
A 07h00 pick-up and about two hours forty-five minutes on the expressway to Phan Thiet. You reach Mui Ne at 10h00 and start at Bai Da Ong Dia, a stretch of coast broken up by rock formations, then walk Suoi Tien, the Fairy Stream, a shallow creek running between red and white sand walls. Lunch is at a local restaurant. At 13h30 you cross to Bau Trang, the White Sand Dunes, where a jeep or quad bike can be hired at your own cost. At 15h30 you move to the Red Dunes, gentler underfoot and easier to walk, and stay there for the sunset. The drive back starts at 17h00 and you reach your Saigon hotel around 20h00.

Day 6
Picked up at 07h30 and in Vung Tau by 09h00. The morning is Thuy Van Beach, the Back Beach, close to ten kilometres of smooth sand: swim, or take an electric car along the seafront boulevard. Bring a swimsuit if you plan to go in. Lunch is coastal cooking at a local restaurant. From 13h30 you climb the roughly one thousand steps to the Christ the King statue for the view along the coastline, in long trousers or a below-the-knee skirt with shoulders covered, then visit Thang Tam whale temple, Bach Dinh, the French colonial White Palace, and Cape Nghinh Phong at the windy southern point. You are back in Ho Chi Minh City by 19h30.

Day 7
Free until the evening. At 19h00 an open Jeep collects you and drives the lit colonial centre: the Reunification Palace, the Opera House, the Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral and Ben Thanh Market. You stop at a rooftop bar for a drink and the view over the skyline, then the Jeep carries on past the busy centre for a different side of the city and pulls up at the river for photographs and a last drink. You are dropped at your hotel at 21h30.

Day 8
Collected from the hotel between 07h30 and 08h30. On the way south you stop at Vinh Trang Pagoda, the largest in the delta. At My Tho you board a boat to see the fish cages and floating houses, then turn into a small canal and cross to a coconut island. A family home serves tropical fruit, honey tea and honey wine; a village workshop shows how coconut candy is made. You walk through the village, ride a cart or a horse carriage to hear southern folk singers, take a fifteen-minute three-plank canoe through the creeks and sit down to a Vietnamese set lunch. The afternoon is free to walk or cycle before the ferry and the road to Can Tho for the night.

Day 9
Breakfast at the hotel, then out at 07h00 by boat onto the smaller branches of the lower Mekong. Cai Rang is the busiest floating market in the region, hundreds of boats loaded with fruit and vegetables and trading done from deck to deck. Ashore you see fruit gardens and a rice noodle workshop. Then Con Son Islet, mid-river in the Hau, green all year: you watch com no, popped rice, being made and eat it warm, walk the village lanes among the areca palms and pick fruit in a garden. A homestay serves local cakes, a herbal cooling drink and shaved ice before lunch at a restaurant, and the group returns to Ho Chi Minh City, ending in District 1.

Days 8 and 9 run together as one two-day trip into the delta with a night in Can Tho; every other night is in the same Saigon hotel. Days 4 and 7 begin in the evening, so those days are free until then.
